Fall Figs and Recipe

We are so fortunate that we can enjoy figs in our climate. Normally, this time of year we are enjoying fresh figs from our tree, but the late frost this Spring impacted our fig tree and boy are we missing the abundance this year!! See below for a delicious fig bruschetta recipe. Figs are a nutrient dense fruit with several health benefits:

  • Figs are a solid source of essential nutrients such as dietary fiber, vitamins (like vitamin K, vitamin B6), minerals (such as potassium, magnesium, copper, manganese, and iron), and antioxidants. The vitamins and minerals in figs, such as vitamin C and zinc, can support a healthy immune system.

  • The high dietary fiber can aid in digestion and promote regular bowel movements. Additionally, the fiber in figs can help you feel full and satiated, which may reduce overall calorie intake.

  • The potassium content in figs can help regulate blood pressure, potentially reducing the risk of heart disease.

  • Despite their natural sugar content, figs have a low glycemic index. This means they can be part of a balanced diet for people with diabetes when consumed in moderation.

  • Figs contain antioxidants like polyphenols and flavonoids, which can help combat oxidative stress and reduce the risk of chronic diseases. Figs contain compounds that may help reduce inflammation in the body, potentially benefiting those with inflammatory conditions.

It's important to note that while figs offer many health benefits, it is important to consume them in moderation as part of a balanced diet. Additionally, individuals with allergies to certain fruits should be cautious when trying figs for the first time. If you have any specific health concerns or conditions, it's advisable to consult with a healthcare professional or a registered dietitian before making significant changes to your diet.

Fig and Balsamic Bruschetta

This dish combines the sweetness of figs with the tanginess of balsamic vinegar and the freshness of basil on crispy baguette slices!

Ingredients:

  • 6-8 fresh figs, washed and thinly sliced

  • 1 French baguette, sliced into 1/2-inch thick rounds

  • 1/4 cup balsamic vinegar

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil

  • 1 clove garlic, peeled and cut in half

  • 1/4 cup fresh basil leaves, thinly sliced

  • Salt and black pepper, to taste

Instructions:

1. Prepare the Baguette Slices:

  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

  • Arrange the baguette slices on a baking sheet.

  • Brush each slice with a little olive oil.

  • Toast them in the oven for about 5-7 minutes, or until they become lightly golden and crispy. Watch them closely to avoid burning. Remove from the oven and let them cool.

2. Make the Balsamic Reduction:

  • In a small saucepan, heat the balsamic vinegar over low-medium heat.

  • Simmer the vinegar until it reduces by half and becomes syrupy. This should take about 5-7 minutes.

  • Remove it from the heat and let it cool. It will thicken further as it cools.

3. Assemble the Bruschetta:

  • Rub the toasted baguette slices with the cut sides of the garlic clove for a subtle garlic flavor.

  • Arrange the sliced figs on top of the baguette slices.

  • Drizzle a little of the balsamic reduction over each fig-topped baguette slice.

  • Sprinkle fresh basil leaves over the figs.

  • Season with a pinch of salt and a dash of black pepper to taste.

4. Enjoy!!
